...melody of romance, beauty, and anything but dry. Its themes are short and graceful; but it is needless to say that they are developed with all the resources and skill of the musician's art. The orchestra under Herr Gericke's excellent leadership, mastered its difficulties easily. The soloist was Miss Emma Juch. She is well known to Boston and Cambridge musical people, and her delightful rendering of the two arias allotted her caused no surprise to those who had heard her before. Her voice is of a beautiful quality, and her charming method was evidently very acceptable...
...overture has seldom been performed so well; it is a very exacting work, but was given with the greatest delicacy and finish. The Bach pieces were perhaps the gem of the evening; and their beauties were admirably brought out with a breadth and solidity which were charming. The soloist was Mr. Sherwood, who played the great Schubert fantasia magnificently, overcoming the technical difficulties with apparent ease. His strength was scarcely equal to some of the heaviest passages with the orchestra, but the exquisite sentiment of the last part was beautifully brought out. The symphony which was heard here...
...perhaps a little fast; it is a notable fact that the works of the older masters are not given with the same fire or care as the modern ones. It is a natural consequence of the present lack of competition in orchestra concerts in Boston. Max Heicrich, the soloist, sang with rare taste, especially in the Mozart Aria, where the roughness of the orchestra was a serious obstacle to a fine rendering of the cadences. His voice is pleasing and remarkably even, without any great power. The Dvorak Symphony offers a large field for criticism. Still...
...SOLOIST, MISS HENRIETTA BEEBE.Every number was thoroughly enjoyable, but the singing of Miss Beebe was especially noteworthy. The aria from "Figaro" was well fitted to display the flexible and mellow qualities of the singer's voice, and was rendered with a richness of expression that held the attention of every listener. The orchestral accompaniment was, in one or two passages, a little too heavy for the voice, but this fault was barely noticeable. The rendering of the two songs to Mr. Henschel's accompaniment was exquisite, and the audience responded with enthusiasm, calling Miss Beebe out four times - a thing...
Miss Emily Winant, the soloist of the evening, was well received, winning especial applause for her rendering of Mozart's beautiful aria from the opera of "Cosi-Fan-Tutte." Among the orchestral pieces, Reinecke's "Manfred" proved to be the most pleasing number on the programme. The execution of Haydn's symphony in C was excellent, if somewhat slow. Wagner's martial and realistic overture to "Rienzi" was finely rendered. In attendance and appreciative spirit shown the concert was a great success...
