...best among them are pretty intimidating. They're all in a different universe of skill than the one I inhabit, of course, but the levels that separate me from the lowliest of these guys are the same as those separating them from the likes of Jernigan, whose solo set I stick around for before heading home. He opens with the bebop standard "Jordu," effectively blowing away about 99 percent of the field, then satisfies the country contingent's needs with terrifying versions of "Black Mountain Rag" and "Orange Blossom Special." I smile in idiotic bliss...
...sextet opened the concert by launching into Rollins' new calypso "Salvador," from his recently-released album This Is What I Do. Scott provided the first fireworks of the night with his dazzling, percussive piano solo (although his occasionally audible singing served as a distraction in this performance as well as at various points throughout the night). Scott and See-Yuen divided time between their primary instruments and kalimbas for the calypso "Global Warming," a tune which simultaneously reflected Rollins' environmental concerns as well as the African influence in Carribean and American music. At the peak improvisatory moment of the night, Rollins followed the closing melodic...
...creating art playing a game? That is the theme and approach of Megan McNaught's solo exhibition, titled Strategy, at Crosstown Arts: she creates a part of the work and then lets the painting dictate the next move. This is exemplified in her most striking work, a series of paintings in either two or three tones where five-inch by five-inch blocks are arranged in a geometric pattern on the large canvas. You can easily see its strategy-game aspect-the blocks are arrayed rather like the pieces in Tetris. However, the attraction of the texture of the brushstrokes...
...Richard Ashcroft, former lead singer of the Verve, should be promoting his solo album at the Paradise next Wednesday, but it's been postponed. On sale right now are tickets for the WBCN X-Mas Rave show (headlined by Collective Soul) on Nov. 29, for the Shane McGowan show on Nov. 30 and for the Richard Marx show on Dec. 3. And if you buy tickets for all three concerts, yes, you can call yourself eclectic...
