...Under the driving of the coaches, the squad worked continuously at a high tension. Hardwick's punting showed great improvement, while Brickley drop-kicked goals with his usual accuracy. Although the plays were run with dash and precision when the regulars were working, the drill became slower and less smooth when the first string men were replaced by the substitutes. The coaches are now endeavoring to prepare the substitutes to fill all gaps, and to overcome the serious defect so manifest in Saturday's game, the vulnerability of the team after a few changes have been made from the regular...

...University fours rowed the first race in the morning, starting up-stream from the Bridge to the two-mile mark at the Navy Yard. The water was smooth, but there was a cold rain falling. The two crews started together, with Yale rowing a slightly higher stroke, but by the time both had settled to 32 strokes to the minute the University crew had taken the lead. This lead was steadily increased until at the finish Yale was eight lengths behind...

Meyer returned to the quarters today and will begin rowing again today...

Harvard Training Quarters, Red Tou, Conn., June 5, 1913.--The work of the University crew today was extremely satisfactory. The benefits of the long rows in smooth water were shown in a mile brush with the Freshman eight. Both crews started rowing about 30 strokes to the minute, the university boat jumping into the lead and opening up distance as they went on. The stroke was gradually raised ending at about 36, and at the finish the Freshman crew was about a length astern. The time was not given out but was said to be exceptionally fast for the last...

These two stimulating essays are followed by several articles of which the most interesting are "Jason", an anonymous dramatic monologue, a poem of smooth metrical effect, and much beauty of phrase, and a narrative sketch "At the Third Table," by W. F. Merrill. This narrative has far too little action. It attracts one, however, by its quiet realism. The author has a sense of the values of character in a group of people at a common-place because he has observed them so shrewdly...
