Resnick, as Robin, is unfortunately the hardest to hear. He has occasion to sing numerous solos, most of which get drowned out by the frequently overpowering orchestra. Resnick has an excellent stage presence and he delivers his dramatic lines well, strongly conveying his character's unwillingness to accept his role as the crime-committing Duke of Murgatroyd. Yet he speaks his songs, and we never get a chance to hear his real voice...

...actors create a pair of convincingly frustrated personalities entirely through song, since no dialogue connects one number to the next. Weiss in particular has a voice that stays equally strong and flexible over several octaves, and her command of Sondheim's sliding harmonies is impressive. ...ghost out to battle now seems pandemic. A writer in the liberal Roman Catholic journal Commonweal proclaims: "Orwell, if he were alive today, would make a worthy opponent for the multinational corporation. He could have made an idea and a book on 'organization man' stand up and sing." The conservative National Review concludes an essay on Orwell with cosmic theatrics: "The forces of darkness have huge armies, a bigger and better arsenal, liberation movements, and the whores' allegiance. The forces of light have Orwell on their side and draw strength from it." On the other side...
