...Reba McEntire in the Broadway revival of "Annie Get Your Gun." Sure, this Irving Berlin classic is about as mainstream as theater gets (though Graciela Daniele's tasteful update, which originally starred Bernadette Peters, goes a long way to neutralizing the politically incorrect treatment of Indians). But a country singer playing Annie Oakley? It's a notion so obvious and unexpected that it has the shock of the revolutionary. The real shock, though, is how well Reba pulls...

...song was a runaway hit in Britain last spring, and from there Gray rode a wave of trans-Continental buzz. He is part of a generation of gifted young singer-songwriters-it also includes such acts as Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy and Beth Orton-who have thrived by providing an alternative to the numbing, bubble-gum conformity of pop, and the hard, forbidding edge of rap and metal. "The people who have bought the record are people who haven't participated in a long time," Gray says, explaining White Ladder's appeal. "It's got melody and a strong...

As lead singer and guitarist of Pavement--one of the most influential indie rock bands of the '90s--Malkmus was a hero to the college nerdoisie with his wry humor, obtuse lyrics and a string of critically lauded albums that failed nobly at the cash register. Pavement broke up last year, and Malkmus has wasted little time...
