...Brit awards, the biggest night in the British music industry, differ from the Grammys in one big way: they are unashamedly patriotic. There are two sets of awards, one for British artists and one for international artists, i.e. everyone else. Which means that while a British singer like Winehouse can sweep the boards at the Grammys, you'll never see an American artist taking home more Brit awards than the British nominees: there are twice as many British-only prizes as international ones. But this isn't about Britain protecting its own; it's about celebrating the specific strengths...

...come upstairs and have another drink), you probably know it doesn’t hurt your cause to be informed. Reading the newspaper, watching CNN, keeping an eye on the oil prices—these things tend to work in your favor. And, if you happen to be a singer whose top singles have hooks like “All I wanna do is have some fun” and “I want to soak up the sun,” these activities might signal a legitimizing stride into a world weighing bigger issues than beaches and bars...

In fact, the band even chooses science over liberal arts for the lyrics of “Atom,” though lead singer, Yan, readily admits, “I just don’t get it.” Less focus on esoteric allusions allows the band to showcase their musicianship, as well as the album’s production. Every song is overflowing with different musical elements, with each instrument distinctly audible...

Apparently, lead singer Sam Endicott of semi-new, semi-“it” band The Bravery has lost the will to breathe—but not the will to make shitty music videos. In the band’s single, “Believe,” Endicott pleads for “something more to keep me breathing for.” The lyrics (despite the bad grammar) recall an Elliot Smith song, filled with dark and brooding imagery; but the video for “Believe” wastes its existential potential on cheap cliches. What...
