Died. John T. Scopes, 70, Tennessee schoolteacher and central figure in the celebrated 1925 "monkey trial"; of cancer; in Shreveport, La. Scopes challenged a state law forbidding the teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution. The trial produced one of the great confrontations of U.S. legal history, pitting Clarence Darrow, the noted civil libertarian, against Prosecutor William Jennings Bryan, famed as a fundamentalist orator and three-time Democratic presidential candidate.
