...could have been read as a lighthearted exchange about beauty and style. But it actually reflects a serious and clamorous debate. A growing community on sites like Nappturality.com urges black women to reject curl-relaxing methods, calling them "taking the easy road" and "conforming" to white aesthetics. Meanwhile, talk-show host Tyra Banks just announced via Twitter that she will abandon her weave and don "no fake hair at all!" for her show's season premiere. Mixed in with the supportive response to the former supermodel's decision was skepticism about whether she could be attractive with what she describes...

...South Africa Is She or Isn't She? It took just under two minutes for Caster Semenya to win gold in the women's 800-m race at the World Athletics Championship on Aug. 19, but it will be weeks before gender tests show whether the 18-year-old South African is in fact a woman. "I worry for my family back in the North," he says, wary of the brutal punishments dealt out to defectors' relatives - never mind the relatives of defectors who choose to subvert the revered likeness of the Dear Leader or who produce blasphemous images of the worker's paradise. One of Sunmu's best-known series of works, the Happy Children paintings, features rows...

...Unsurprisingly, Sunmu is headed overseas for his next show - a group exhibition at the New Society for Visual Arts (NGBK) gallery in Berlin on the theme of migration during the Cold War. The show is being held as part of the commemorations for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and runs from Oct. 10 to Nov. 15. It doesn't look like there will be a repeat of German reunification on the Korean peninsula anytime soon, but Sunmu can still hope. One of his strangely poignant paintings depicts a group of teenagers from the North...

...France, they call him Le Roi de Crazy for his comedy roots, but in the U.S. Jerry Lewis is known these days as the King of Telethons. The actor has hosted an epic television outreach for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) since 1955, when his first 16½-hour show raised more than $600,000 in a live broadcast from Carnegie Hall in New York City. That was before Lewis became the official host and was given the ratings-challenged Labor Day slot to host the show, and since then it's become an even greater test of a performer...
