British railways ran 1,500 extra trains for Easter holiday traffic-last year the only extra trains had been for late-shift workers. Londoners picnicked on Hampstead Heath; a short distance from town ten carnival shows were running at once, complete with carousels and gypsy sideshows. Frenchmen made for the country too.
