This concern for urban fabric led Weese to his first renovation job-Chicago's Auditorium Theater. Designed by Adler and Sullivan in the 1880s, it had become a U.S.O. club with bowling alleys and finally ended as a neglected shell. Its roof leaked; its 4,000 velvet-covered seats were rotting. Brudno's death tragically confirmed the warnings sounded by psychiatrists before release of the prisoners. They had predicted that many men might return emotionally scarred for life (TIME, Feb. 19). Los Angeles Psychoanalyst Helen Tausend had said that captivity may leave a P.O.W. "only the shell of a man," and Yale Psychiatrist Robert J.
