...bills in recent years aside from War measures, which the opposition party, whether Democratic or Republican, has not tried to use as an excuse for bedeviling its opponents. The credit for this achievement, so far as it goes, must be awarded to the Democrats, although the Administration forces .must share it in some degree for having made proposals which the Democrats considered it unwise or unsound to oppose as a whole...
...Stock Exchange remained the liveliest feature of business during the past week. Motor shares, "bulled" for weeks to unaccustomed heights, became at length top-heavy. Thus the "technical condition" of the stock market became very weak; news of the Boston Reserve Bank's rate advance was enough to topple the motor stocks over in a record day of 3,400,000 share sales. Because of this unprecedented volume, many ignorant people concluded that a panic had started. As a matter of fact, nothing of the sort developed. The smash in motors was simply a large-scale reaction...
Three previous times in the history of the Stock Exchange there had been "3,000,000-share days." The first was the record "bull day" for all time on April 30, 1901; the second, the "Northern Pacific corner" day on May 9, 1901; and the third the "peace leak" day in December, 1916. Of these the second held the record at 3,336,695 shares. Nov. 10, 1925, however, surpassed this 24-year record by seeing 3,448,747 shares sold in the Exchange open market. According to some financial scribes, this was the worst break in the market...
...directors of the Corporation evidently are believers in sharing its profits with its shareholders, particularly when the cash position of the concern is as strong as at present. In addition to its regular quarterly dividend of $1.50 on each common share, an extra dividend of $5.00 a share was declared. This means that, in addition to the $36,131,000 of regular dividends paid on Motors stock this year, $25,808,000 will be paid put in extras, making a total dividend disbursement of $61,939,000 out of 1925 profits...
...must be remembered that these statistics of daily sales on the Exchange, apart from being somewhat hastily compiled by newspapers from the stock tape, are defective for another reason. Only sales of 100 shares or multiples thereof are regularly put on the tape. Hence, sales of "odd lots"-that is, amounts of from 1 to 99 shares-are not included in ordinary calculations of sales on the Exchange. In recent years, individual sales in odd lots have equaled or outnumbered sales of 100 shares, while odd lot sales constitute an additional third to the published total of 100-share sales...
