...movie parodies explode-o-matic thrillers and yet, unlike the Hot Shots! Part Deux school of pure movie lampoons, tries also to be an earnest explode- o-matic thriller. It is a very fine line. "Every moment of every day," says screenwriter Shane Black, of working on the script with his partner David Arnott, "we looked at each other and said, 'This isn't Naked Gun.' " Black, who wrote Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, says, "I hate action movies," but he also maintains that the new film is "a heartfelt example" of the genre. Sort of. For instance...

...easterns, in which the court system is a semicorrupt mess but the heroic judge/prosecutor/defense attorney finds the loophole that achieves justice. This one is a horseless, string-'em- up western whose message is that black hats are felonizing homesteaders and courts are run by sociobabbling liberals. Come back, Shane...

(Last year Beattie returned about $5,000 to the welfare department.) She recalls, "I kept thinking of Sylvester Stallone, penniless and writing Rocky because he believed in it." Beattie's "I'm-in-the-emotional-trenches-wi th-you" style...

...that lowly status is on the verge of a major rewrite. As studios battle one another for the limited supply of surefire scripts, screenwriters have begun snaring huge fees. In a spectacular bidding war among major studios last month, producer David Geffen bought a Shane Black script titled The Last Boy Scout for $1.75 million, which is believed to be the most ever paid for a single screenplay. Says Black: "I really won the lottery this time...
