...expected to remain so. Not surprisingly, they are daughters of the leadership-girls whom the Chinese, in pre-Communist days, called "gold boughs and jade leaves," or descendants of noble houses. Like the rest of China's 375 million women, they adhere to austere and sexless blue-uniformity in public. There the similarity, and the egalitarianism, ends. In the plush suburban villas that Peking's leaders call home, they enjoy servants...

Ginn's production employs more conventional mystiques, making simple and obvious reversals of sexual roles: Madame Irma's "visitors" are played as vain effeminates, sexless transvestites who, when gathered together in the last act, remind one of the opening of Macbeth played in drag. Similarly, Irma is conceived as the Madam of an answering service, a nervous dike devoid of femininity and consequent feminine insight. This is supported by the text often, particularly in the dialogue with Carmen, but it annihilates any credibility to her stated relationship with Georges, the chief of police. Like its promotion, the picture is witless and pointless. Worse, it is also sexless. In the title role of a bored sub urban housewife, Anne Jackson prattles endlessly to the camera about love and commuting, but never manages to make a connection with the audience or her fellow players. As an oversated movie-star seducer, Walter Matthau-unglamorous, unamorous and unfunny -galumphs around with his shirt off, revealing a physique as saggy as the script. A busy actor these days, Matthau also stars in a current box-office hit, The Odd Couple (TIME, May 3). Thus, in a single season...

As he states, "by nature, from her creation woman is dependent in much the same way as, grammatically, the feminine has affinity for the masculine." As for God being sexless: that is usually the case with pure spirits, I would assume. However, it was our Lord who directed that we address God as Father, and fathers have always been masculine in my experience. As for Christ's mother being glorified only because she so willingly accepted a subordinate role, what other...

...truth, as Mary Daly says, God is not masculine or feminine, but sexless. That's what bothers me-the sexless phrase. For it got me to thinking about the sign of the Cross. But I finally decided to stick with the old way: "Father, Son and Holy Ghost." I just couldn't see me blessing myself and saying: "It, Son, and Holy Ghost." You understand, don't you, Mary...
