...reproductive organs of postmenopausal women are still viable. These women can now become pregnant using someone else's eggs, according to a remarkable report in last week's New England Journal of Medicine. A team led by Dr. Mark Sauer of the University of Southern California impregnated six of seven postmenopausal women, ages 40 to 44, using eggs that were taken from younger women and fertilized with sperm from the older women's husbands. Four of these prematurely menopausal women gave birth to healthy offspring, one miscarried, and one had a stillborn baby -- an outcome that Sauer said would have...
Yunus is not the only Third World visionary to teach Americans to think more creatively about credit. "The U.S. is seven to eight years behind the rest of the world when it comes to lending to the poor," says William Burrus, executive director of Accion International, a private development organization in Cambridge, Mass. Accion has loaned $75 million to workers in Central and South America and created 100,000 permanent jobs. When Accion decided to widen its mission to fight poverty in the U.S., it dispatched Delma Soto-Larsen to start a self-employment project in the Williamsburg section...
Mothers routinely make sacrifices for their children, but what happened last week was unprecedented. In an extraordinary seven-hour operation, doctors at Stanford University Medical Center transferred part of a mother's lung to her dying 12-year-old daughter. Dr. Vaughn Starnes, who performed the operation, says the mother, 46, should not notice the loss of one lobe of a lung. The lobe is expected to expand to fill the space in the daughter's chest created...
...alliance's victory is a relief for President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, who dismissed Bhutto's government in August, and for the military leaders who encouraged his move. But Bhutto's drama is not over. Several pending misconduct cases could bar her from politics for seven years, and criminal charges against her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, could send him to prison for 17 years. The coalition, for its part, needs to come up with solutions to the issues troubling the country, including a critical economic situation and sour relations with Washington...
Northern Ireland's 20 years of violence have produced instances of breathtaking brutality, but last week the Irish Republican Army reached a new low when it turned innocent civilians into human bombs. Seven persons were killed and at least 36 injured in synchronized dawn attacks, when two explosive-laden vans blew up at British army checkpoints near Londonderry, in the northwest, and Newry, in the south. Their drivers, one of whom survived, had been forcibly strapped into their seats...
