...Liar" is one of the dramatized stock stories which were produced on the stage of the 18th century. In that period certain companies of actors were accustomed to select one of their ten or twelve stock stories on hand, two or three hours before the public production, and then produce it on the stage, improvising the speeches. Goldoni conceived the idea of dramatizing such a play, and "The Liar" is one of his successes. It was first produced in 1750.
