...There seem to be three chief ways of accounting for these facts. The first asserts that good is not necessarily pleasing to the Power that orders the world, nor evil displeasing; that good and bad fortune is meted out to all promiscuously and independently of any so-called "desert," There is no reason why those who are considered wicked should not have as much prosperity as anyone else. The second explanation is Job's, who thought that everything is now as it should be and that we should see that it was if our sight was clear enough. The third...
Intercollegiate chess tournaments by correspondence seem at present rather popular. In addition to the games which are in progress between the chess clubs of Harvard and Yale, there are two games now being played by mail between Yale and Princeton. Yale was the challenger, and Princeton after holding a college tournament to decide upon three men to conduct her moves, accepted the offer and began playing. Already five moves have been made. These are the first games between Yale and Princeton since 1889 when Princeton was the winner...
Every time the examination period comes round the petty annoyances of our examination system are more enforced upon the minds of all. It would seem that some of these might be done away with by the Faculty. Stearns, Steadman, Heard and Hubbard have not yet gone into training. The result is that Captain Watriss has an entirely green crew to work with. The candidates that rowed last week were Walcott, Young, Ganson, Gratwick, G. McKay, Frost and Cummin. Of these Gratwick...
Saint Paul often says of certain things "I know," or "we k ?," not giving any reason for the knowledge or any proof that it is sound. We all seem to have more or less of this feeling in our own lives. We are convinced of some things which do not owe their firmness for us to logic and which skepticism could never take away. Five great facts may be mentioned concerning which this certitude may be felt. The first is one's existence; an "I" using the body as an instrument, superior to it. Another certitude to many...
