...center for pregnant inmates until she gives birth, which will be any day. Last year Corneau gave birth to a son, who died soon afterward. Prosecutors say he would have lived had he undergone a routine procedure to clear his fragile lungs, but Corneau belongs to a religious sect that rejects modern medicine. She also rejects the authority of the government, and so has declined to hire a lawyer. The A.C.L.U. has asked the state's high court to step in anyway, since there's no evidence that this fetus is in imminent danger. The court has declined...
...liberalizing the economy will necessarily bring unemployment and uncertainty to millions of ordinary Chinese, raising the specter of massive social unrest that could potentially tear China apart. The depth of that fear among the leadership was evident in last year's crackdown on the apparently harmless Falun Gong religious sect, and it will almost certainly act as a brake on Beijing's implementing the economic liberalization measures to which it has agreed. Their "Big Bad" has replaced a claim to nobility--replacing magnanimity with pomposity; their swagger has replaced a justly dignified comportment; and their music follows in tow. Which is not to say that they are unenjoyable--they are, in my opinion, the best...
