Morality is the ostensible subject of Blue Chips, from a script Shelton wrote in 1980. A college coach (Nick Nolte) fights for traditional values against venal alumni who want to buy the best players. But the film avoids the hard truth that even traditional values in big-time college sports are a shuck. Education is just the fig leaf for the only multibillion-dollar entertainment conglomerate in which the entertainers (the players) don't get paid. The Nolte character, like any college coach, is the overseer of slave labor...

...movie handles this paradox with comfortable predictability. Not only does the story tap into the archetypal American dream, it draws its script exclusively from time-honored traditions of red-blooded American slapstick jokes, formulaic characters, and racial stereotypes. Everything is familiar and expected, kind of like an old armchair with beer stains that has been sitting in the family basement forever--not particularly attractive or inviting, but no one ever bothers to move it to the junk heap...

...comes wonderfully close to creating coherent and interesting fare out of a standard retelling of the main events Shaw's career. The play would probably be most entertaining, however, for those who do not know very much about the general life and times of GBS, since Michael Voysey's script and Donal Donnelley's acting will probably not tend gel nicely with a pre-existing mental Shaw...

This not because either the script of My Astonishing Self or the acting are false to the personality of Shaw; rather they try to come too close to some kind o Essential Shaw. Voysey tries to show Shaw's arrogance (note the title of the play) and the humility beneath, the atheism and the vegetarianism, the pacifism and the Fabianism...
