Male lead Ross Benjamin '96, on the other hand, unconvincingly played Raina's suitor, Captain Bluntschli. Fairly distant from his character, Benjamin seemed to be reading lines from a script, as if he lacked the time to incorporate emotion into his role. With a lackadaisical stroll and a tone lacking in energy, he failed to drive the show forward...
When these characters are driven by greed and last--those traits which are celebrated in Vegas--this film works. But soon the main characters lose their passion and the script, by Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi, can offer them no real options. In "Casino" everyone is content to gamble without worrying. When Ace, Ginger and Nicky finally do lose everything, it's too late--the audience has stopped caring. The impression which remains is a richness of atmosphere which is sickening...
This weakness is probably a fault of the script, as Pascale Bussieres's performance is otherwise marvelous. Her portrayal of Camille reveals both the character's strong sexual feelings and her reluctance to violate her religious principles. As Petra, Rachel Crawford is a convincing lesbian, without making that the character's defining feature. She is so appealingly whimsical that we can see exactly why Camille is attracted...
