Above all, the script is craftsmanlike, and director Ella Gerber has given it a craftsmanlike production. Stewart Chancy's set is sturdily Elizabethan, and is well suited to the play, Playwrights Berney and Richardson have not written poetry, but a piece of good prose like "Design for a Stained Glass Window" is always welcome...

Then he hustled her out of the four-room suite, through one of the hotel's side exits and into a black Buick. Aly took the wheel himself and roared off to the clinic two miles away...
...after that? Hollywood still beckoned, and millions of fans yearned. No enterprising cinemogul had yet announced plans to sign up little Yasmin (as David O. Selznick once bid for the services of Shirley Temple's baby daughter). But thus far, the courtship-wedding-confinement-birth script from true life had been a howling romantic success...
Unfortunately, the actors keep getting into the foreground, brandishing passports from Hollywood and posturing through a sprawling script based on the bestselling drugstore novel of Borgia intrigue by Samuel (Captain from Castile) Shella-barger (see BOOKS). The very authenticity of the surroundings helps to betray the story and characters as strictly from Graustark. And even Graustark is betrayed: moviegoers willing to take swashbuckling romance on its own easygoing terms are likely to chafe at the film's portentous pace and the political airs it puts...
...always practical either, because the show you see on opening night may be quite different from the one you see during the second week of the run. (A flagrant case of this is Garson Kanin's play, "The Rat Race," of which only 35 percent of the original 'Boston' script remained by the time it opened in New York...
