And it works pretty well. Lawrence Kasdan's script gives Rachel a messy life: the band rehearsing in her living room, members of her entourage wandering in and out, a son lonesome and looking for a father figure. In contrast, Frank has no life at all: an underfurnished tract house with the mail piling up at the front door, no visible friends or light-minded interests...
With no costume or set changes and few props, the minimalist nature of the The Fantasticks places a great burden on the cast. The script demands that the cast be multi-talented enough to sing, dance, and of course, act. Since the cast of the Leverett House production lacks the versatility to fulfill these exceptionally demanding roles, it appears at times as a painful endeavor to the audience...
...fault is not all Harlan's though. The production is crippled from the beginning by a meandering, esoteric, overlong script. And Cabranes-Grant's direction--what little is apparent in the performance--doesn't make Creditors more interesting or understandable. As the play winds on, it becomes harder and harder even to care what happens to the love triangle...
Fortunately, Playing With Fire is far lighter fare than Creditors. It's an off-beat, fun show. While the script is less than compelling, the acting is uniformly outstanding.
