Alas, there's a story to slog through: how the preacher must learn to trust his own and his parishioners' best instincts. And that means, in the script by Nat Mauldin and Allan Scott, endless scenes of perfunctory angst. Vance, who has more screen time than either of the big stars, is required to play it slow and sullen. This leads director Penny Marshall into strategies alternately depressive and manic. She trails dutifully after the dour preacher, then binges on cuteness: a lisping kid's radiance, say, followed by a reaction shot of adoring adults going "Awww." The audience...
...production's success begins, as one would expect, with Catherine Ingman's stage direction. A constant, careful and oftentimes outrageous choreography of cast members supplements the humor of the script. Sir William Schwenck Gilbert's wit is very much couched in wordplay and innuendo, and Ingman creates--in effeminate prancing, mock-stealthy stalking and slapstick combat--a physical counterpart to the clever turns of phrases. While such physical comedy can compromise itself with too much zeal or too little precision, this seldom happens. The actors seem to understand the appropriate bounds for their movements and the script is never upstaged...
...docents use working models to repeat Leonardo's experiments. At nearby computer terminals, museumgoers view digitized images of the manuscript close up, reading English translations alongside Leonardo's Italian, zeroing in on specific drawings and flipping back and forth between the master's idiosyncratic mirror-image writing and ordinary script. (The left-handed Leonardo wrote backward for comfort--not, as myth has it, for protection against prying eyes...
...Terribles, each based on a film of the same name by Cocteau. Distinguished not only by Glass's familiar, artful brand of minimalist music but also by Cocteau's impish, erotic sensibility, the operas are nevertheless quite different from one another. Orphee was a conventional opera that followed the script of the original film. With La Belle, Glass went a step further, stripping the film of its sound track and composing a live but carefully synchronized operatic accompaniment that quickly took its place among his finest and most viscerally exciting works...
That's a pretty accurate assessment of a movie that drips with so many plugs for products that the characters joke about it in the script. The film, which links Michael Jordan with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the Looney Tunes stable, has generated more than 200 spin-off items that Warner is hoping will eventually pull in $1 billion. That would be on top of the $3 billion already generated annually by Looney Tunes paraphernalia. But Space Jam is different from most movies in that it not only feels as if it were inspired...
