...times Coming Home is too ambitious for its own good. The screenplay not only spins the tale of a tragic love triangle, it also attempts to chronicle Sally's growing political radicalization and her feminist-styled friendship with another woman on base (Penelope Milford). In the film's second half, the narrative extravagance takes its toll. Contrived plot devices, including the suicide of a minor character and the sudden intrusion of malevolent FBI agents, spring up to jerk Coming Home toward its conclusion...
...this story's complex web of blackmail and murder. That's the answer to the question, asked whenever this film is brought up, of who comes out as the culprit in the end. At least that's the answer in the book; whether it actually carried over into this screenplay is not at all clear. One of those great rumors has it that Faulkner, who was out in Hollywood taking his day in the sun touching up this script, could make neither heads nor tails of the plot-line and got in touch with novelist Raymond Chandler for some clues...
Well, as they say, if you like this kind of thing, this is the kind of thing you will like. Michael Crichton, who directed Coma and wrote the screenplay, is a doctor, and so is Robin Cook, who wrote the novel from which the film was made, so presumably the two of them are not try ing to induce a nationwide spasm of hysterical loathing of the medical profession...
