...Best Screenplay: There's nothing like sitting around with your friends trying to figure out the twists of a great film noir. L.A. Confidential was awfully sunny for the genre, but it had the omnipresent sense of uneasiness necessary to give you the shivers. Plus, it had more surprises than any movie since The Usual Suspects...

Best Picture: Good Will Hunting. Aside from the hamminess Robin Williams always feels compelled to produce when presented with a serious role (somehow he manages to look sillier in movies like Dead Poets Society than in movies like Jack,) this is the movie of the year. The screenplay respects the audience's sensibilities, the characters are multifaceted and intriguing, and of course, it has some great shots of the Spare Change man on Mass. Ave.--blatant Harvard propaganda at its best. Not only does it have the only "poor boy from the wrong side of the tracks meets high-spirited...

...other big winner was "As Good As It Gets," whose unlikely romantic coupling of Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson got a lock on best actor and actress. "Good Will Hunting" picked up some well-deserved gongs: best supporting actor for Robin Williams, a long overdue first win, and best screenplay for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the freshest faces in town. Meanwhile, October Films will bring out Orgazmo, a feature-film porn parody written, directed and starred in by Parker, and produced and acted in by Stone. They are writing the screenplay of the prequel to Dumb and Dumber for New Line Cinema, and they are acting in BASEketball, a film by David Zucker, part of the team that made the Airplane! movies, which Stone and Parker greatly admire. BASEketball is shooting now, and Zucker says of his stars, "They're up all hours. They work all day on this movie, then they go and write South Park. They have people...

WILL WINDamon (who will win one for his screenplay) and Hoffman (who already has two, doggonit), are easy to strike. I'm not convinced Peter Fonda's career ever impressed anyone enough to merit a "comeback" paean, so look for Robert Duvall to eke out a victory over SAG and Globe winner Nicholson, Duvall is much-admired and under-Oscared, and he wrote, directed, financed and starred in his picture...take that, Matt Damon...
