...claw against Shane. Only once does the action slow down, during a gum battle between Palance and Lancaster, who seem to be firing off philosophical asides about the life of violence mainly because they need a rest. Most of the dialogue has a whiplash sting, and since the scenario is chiefly concerned with ambushes and train holdups and muscle-hard suspense, there is seldom time out for blather...
...Appaloosa. When two strong men stake their claims to a strumpet and a stallion, the enmity between them can be the stuff that fleshes out the bony structure of the very best westerns. But in this film, a mulish scenario puts a frustrating checkrein on the excitement, and it is slim pickings for Marlon Brando, playing a saddle tramp whose dream is to become a horse breeder, and John Saxon, portraying a Mexican bandit chieftain who has a girl (Anjanette Comer) up for grabs in his lair...
Married. Omar Bradley, 73, retired five-star general, first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1949-1953), board chairman of Bulova Watch Co.; and Esther Dora Buhler, 44, longtime family friend and TV scriptwriter (My Three Sons, The Cara Williams Show), who is writing a movie scenario of Bradley's life; she for the third time, he for the second (his first wife died last December); in Del Mar, Calif...
...Soupy Scenario. The season's action series are ticketed for anyone from nine to 90-IQ, that is. The Green Hornet (ABC), concocted by the man behind Batman, is played straight. Only changes from the 1936-52 radio version are James Bond-type hardware and a bigger-beat theme song, blown by Al Hirt. There is nothing wrong with the show that cannot be cured by turning off the set. Tarzan (NBC) has a vaster menagerie than last season's high-rated jungle epic, Daktari, and just as soupy a scenario. Ron Ely is mesomorphic enough as Tarzan...
Given the presence of a Cockney Casanova, Alfie's plot predictably unreels more like a score card than a scenario. Among the standard items is the eager middle-aged nymph (Shelley Winters) who entertains Alfie in a big bath tub. One of the more pathetic entries is the hen-shaped wife of a sick friend-they take char together, and then Alfie makes a grab at the old girl, just to "round off the tea nicely." And then there is the nubile nurse (Shirley Anne Field)-while Alfie is recuperating from overexertion in a TB sanatorium, she comes round...
