Even if the pro-choice case against Alito will be framed delicately, it is a surprise twist in the nomination that a battle is shaping up at all. A few weeks ago, it looked as if Alito might sail through the Senate as easily as Chief Justice John Roberts did last summer. But that changed with Bush's political fortunes. According to Democratic pollster Geoff Garin, when the President was riding high in the polls in January '05, 53% of the public said they had confidence in him to nominate good judges; now only 42% feel that way. "A President...
...China, measured not least by the rapid modernization of its armed forces. During his four and a half years in office, Koizumi has pushed Japan and its so-called Self-Defense Force into a much higher profile on the world stage. In 2002, the Japanese destroyer Kirishima set sail for the Indian Ocean to help refuel U.S. and allied ships involved in Afghanistan operations, and Koizumi has offered unstinting support for Bush's war in Iraq. Women are built for the it-takes-a-village life, in which they provide long-term care to a very few young and must sail them safely into an often hostile world. Among some of our evolutionary kin--baboons, macaques and other old-world monkeys--this can be especially tricky since young females inherit their mother's social rank. The mothers must thus operate the levers of society deftly so as to raise both their...
There is an old saying: two heads are better than one. While that may not always be true, it is definite that two regatta victories are also better than one, and that is exactly what the Harvard sailing team picked up this weekend. The Harvard coed team won the Erin Schell Trophy at MIT on Sunday, and the Crimson women also won the Victorian Coffee Urn, which Harvard hosted. The coed team won the Schell Trophy with 208 points, besting second place Brown by 32 points. The Crimson was led by its B division team of sophomores Kyle Kovacs...
