...microcosm, the upheavals of postcolonial Africa: the diaspora from stable rural societies into hectic cities governed by money rather than loyalties. Mugezi learns that he must be devious and tough simply to stay alive. He fights what he sees as the tyranny of his parents and the authoritarian rule of the priests at his school. For a while, he idolizes Amin's power and intransigence. But this feeling fades, and the stroll he takes through anarchic Kampala, his adopted urban home, just after the overthrow of Amin in 1979 becomes a harrowing hell. Precious few first novels are as phantasmagoric...

...himself, in 1952, did represent a definite change after Democratic rule stretching back to the first inauguration of Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. But the election of 1952 was mostly a mandate for Ike, not for the Republican way of life. ...Despite retaining power, the results are a stunning reversal for the party that led the liberation war against white minority rule and has ruled the country, with Mugabe at its head, ever since independence 20 years ago. ZANU campaigned on the basis of its liberation war record, attempting to demonize the opposition by casting them as stooges of the country's 70,000 remaining whites. The centerpiece of Mugabe's campaign has been the mass occupation by squatters of some 870 of the country's 4,000 white-owned farms, which occupy the best 70 percent of Zimbabwe's arable...
