...church, so often a source of strength and shelter in the black and Hispanic communities, AIDS is a prickly subject. Both the black churches and the Roman Catholic Church have traditionally been bastions of conservative values on sexual and social matters, and the idea of preaching the use of condoms and clean needles is difficult for many clergymen. In the Hispanic community, moreover, where the cult of machismo still reigns, men regard even the discussion of condoms as a diminishment of manhood...

...hard fate at the best of times, and the best of times have been rare. In imperial Rome, orphans were commonly sold into slavery or simply killed off. Although the Roman Catholic Church forbade infanticide, Pope Innocent III was dismayed by the number of children's bodies he saw floating in the Tiber. With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, one chronicler reported that orphans "swarmed the streets like locusts," and locusts do not live very long either...

Still, any references to Dad are conspicuously missing from the self-avowed roman a clef. "My route to intimacy is routine," writes Fisher's fictional protagonist. "I establish a pattern with somebody, and then I notice when they're not there." Looks like this is one case where absence did not make the heart grow fonder...

...which will be attended by two dozen other ecumenical leaders, will mark the first time that Graham, the world's best-known Protestant, has preached alongside a Pope. It will also be John Paul's first important acknowledgment of the evangelical movement. Some conservative Protestants who are hostile to Roman Catholicism urged Graham to stay away; indeed, the president of Graham's denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, is bypassing the event. But Graham may feel an obligation toward the Pope, who, as Karol Cardinal Wojtyla, permitted the evangelist to speak in a major Cracow church in 1978. Graham faces...
