Dancer Leslie Caron is really rolling these days. Despite the 24 years since her film debut in An American in Paris, Caron looked fit enough as she rehearsed on roller skates for the 42nd Gala de l'Union des Artistes, a Paris benefit in behalf of retired entertainers. The show, which takes place May 23, features show-biz folk in a circus setting and includes Actresses Romy Schneider as a horsewoman and Sydne Rome as a lion tamer. Caron, 43, who first laced on skates just three weeks ago, has been wheeling about every day and, according to bystanders...
...nostalgia for two things--first, for the eternal appeal of the rogue, the high-energy, affable cheap who spends more money than he screws out of other people; second, for the miasma of the thirties, the thrill of the moment when you can no longer be sure that the roller coaster you're on is going to carry you up again, and you just lay back and abandon yourself to the pleasures of a swift rocketing downwards...
THERE WAS a New York painter named Ad Reinhardt who, before his death, had advanced his art to such a point that he was painting canvases that were--well, frankly, they were entirely black. Rossi said the Engelbert Award is given to the player "who is the town clown or whatever...to someone who's done something crazy." The trophy is mounted with a hockey player on roller skates. Recipient of the award was Carr, who quipped, "This is a heck of an award for a captain-elect." Rossi did not specify--perhaps in the interest of good taste--for what Carr got the award...
...Association, which organized competition in 1966 and has built training facilities in Utah, is brutal. Summer workouts begin with a 6-mile morning run, wood splitting, more running and then, after lunch, weight lifting. Lack of snow is no obstacle: training includes 15-mile slogs on roller skis-3-ft. skis with roller-skate wheels. If anyone slacks off, Coach Marty Hall drops him or her from the program. "We're not here to fool around," says Hall. That may be a promise of things to come at the Olympics next year...
