...Yacht Corp. yards in Jacksonville, Fla., Huck went to work. He locked himself in his laboratory, neglected his family, cut his friends, put in 100 hours a week over a drawing board. Last July his PT-69, a neat, sleek boat which jumps from wave to wave like a rock skipping over the water, was ready for Navy tests. Last week the Navy showed that it shared some of Huck's confidence that he had built the fastest, smoothest torpedo boat in the world: it gave him a contract (about $1,000,000) to build eight of them...
...resounding strike call read like a timetable. At 6 a.m. on Dec. 7 the five railway brotherhoods (engineers, firemen, conductors, trainmen, switchmen) would walk out on the Santa Fe, Rock Island, New York Central, Denver & Rio Grande, Katy, Pennsylvania, Southern Pacific, 44 other lines. Next day they would quit on the Chesapeake & Ohio, Chicago & North Western, the Gulf Coast lines, 40 others. By the third day, on 156 roads that carry passengers, food, coal, machinery and mail from New England to California, from Florida to Washington, not a wheel would turn...
From the U.S. Army's Watervliet, Rock Island and Springfield Arsenals they wheedled a little obsolete equipment; from many a New England textile factory they got a machine or two, one 75 years old. Production is now 150 a day. There has been only one reject...
...dramatically incoherent as life itself, How Green is a radiant idyll of the dignity and charm of honest, simple working people. Well acted by a competent, unstarred cast, the picture is a credit to Director Ford, who is himself a big, rumpled, modest Celt (Irish) with a tidy mind, rock-ribbed integrity and a talent for turning out superb pictures (The Informer, Arrowsmith, Grapes of Wrath, Stagecoach). It is also his last picture-for the present. He is now on active duty with the U.S. Navy...
Only man on both last year's and this year's team is Sam May, "Rock of Gibralter" guard from the Gold Coast. Dick Loomis, who was an all-House center on the Winthrop team last year, was barely nosed out for the first choice by Lew Sandler of Kirkland. It was pretty much of a toss-up between the two players. Another position decided after much debate was the right guard slot, where "Buck" Lasser, Deacon Sophomore, was edged by his team-mate, Tom Garvey, who is a Senior...
