Bride by Mistake (RKO-Radio) had every right to be a perfectly awful mistake, but turns out to be pretty amusing. Its raw material is one of those five-&-dime stories about the sensitive multimillion-heiress (Laraine Day) who, eager to be sure that her lover (Alan Marshal) is not overvaluing the basely fiscal aspects of their relationship, swaps places with her secretary (Marsha Hunt) and all but bangs the pair's heads together. The surprising finished product is the result of the fact that the film is written by Phoebe and Henry Ephron, directed by Richard Wallace...
...RKO we could only pick out a few people who didn't blend completely into the shadows. In the midst of the beblam, rabid fans of Lena's were Bill Harrington and Pete Holm. Credit for its awkward grace is due in part to a round dozen of its little-known players, in part to its scripters and director and cameraman, but most of all to 40-year-old Producer Val Lewton, nephew...
...down and drew his own version (based on that of Disney Cartoonist Kenneth O'Brien). From Bergen's final sketch, RKO Sculptor Joseph Zokoirch modeled Effie in plaster. The final wooden achievement is a full-fashioned ventrilowitch named for Bergen's senior script writer, Zeno Klinker...
Step Lively (RKO-Radio), Frank Sinatra's second picture, converts the hit stage play Room Service into a black & white musical which spoofs the show business, itself and its hero...
