Flat Shofar. As an insight into the self-righteous intricacies of Hasidism and the endlessly wrenching interior dialogue of the faithful Jew, Potok's novel is sound and satisfying. In craft and characterization, particularly in the passages dealing with a boy's reaction to World War II, it rings as flat as a shofar blown by a gentile. Listening to a radio report on the Normandy invasion, Reuven thinks miserably of the "broken vehicles and dead soldiers" on the beaches. No base ball-playing American kid-Jewish or otherwise-thought for a moment of bodies on that glorious...

...Self-Righteous Zeal. Frei proved to be a dedicated reformer but a poor politician. In proceeding with his revolution, he managed to offend just about everyone. The Communists attacked his land-reform program because it stole, with little change, the thunder from their land-for-the-masses campaign promises. The landlords were unhappy because the government paid low prices for the expropriated property. A united front of leftist parties called FRAP attacked his plan to "Chileanize" the country's foreign-owned copper industry because it stopped short of nationalization. The rich complained about having to pay income taxes...

He started a running feud with the opposition-controlled Senate, which last month even denied him permission to travel to the U.S. on a state visit and allowed him to fly to Punta del Este this week only as a gesture of national pride. It was largely to show the Senate who was boss that Frei put such emphasis on the municipal elections, confident that a popular surge of votes...

...most simplistically self-righteous act of interference came when administrators at UCLA chose to act on complaints from several students or their families that pictures of nudes were being shown in an art history course. Crank complaints of this sort have apparently occurred as long as art history courses have been given but significantly enough have been ignored prior to Reagan's becoming Governor. In a state where the public schools are headed by a man so reactionary he opposes use of textbooks mentioning the UN, it is frightening to contemplate extension of this conservative vise-grip to higher education...
