Dvorak, the talented Bohemian has evidently been a close student of Beethoven. In many places through the symphony there are passages which remind one of the great master, although the originality of the work is unquestioned. The first movement is fiery and modulatory. The prevailing tone of the second is much quieter, but it reveals a wonderful depth of earnest feeling.
