...underwear in the department stores. Nor have they loosened the reins of repression during the past 16 years. At the same time, however, material conditions are easier, and life has settled into a consistent, predictable norm that avoids the extremes of Khrushchev's erratic liberalization and Stalin's relentless terror. For many Soviets, that is reassuring, especially against the backdrop of their country's new prestige and power abroad...

...only surprise Carny offers the viewer is its relentless ordinariness. A movie that promises, in its first reels, to update Nightmare Alley, the old Tyrone Power sideshow shocker, soon relaxes into a standard triangle tale of love, jealousy and reconciliation. No freaks, no geeks-just two pals and a nymphet with a heart of gold. All that is left is the oldtime star power of the lead performers: Robertson, with his motel-room eyes and a voice like pure nicotine; Gary Busey, strong and lovable behind his goony, gummy smile; and Jodie Foster, poised for a swan dive into young...

The corps is capable of disciplined ensemble work and, on other occasions, some ragged footwork and wayward arms. The star system provides Americans with standard-setting performances, but not even Chase can always find a way to make virtuosos like Makarova, Gregory and Gelsey Kirkland flourish in harmony-or even appear in the same city. At curtain time, there was the usual clutter of telegrams. One began, "Rosalynn and I." A message from Baryshnikov, who was in Paris, burbled...
