...late Professor Charles Foster Kent of Yale, a good man, organized the Council eight years ago. Its purpose has been "to cooperate ... in giving students, particularly undergraduate students, a scholarly and sympathetic interpretation of religion, chiefly through the channels of the regular curriculum." The chief method of cooperation has been to select and finance "young men and women of high quality of intellect and spirit" through post-graduate university courses, and then commend such Fellows for teaching and administrative positions.
