Refined Voluptuary. The Satyricon-whose title may refer both to satire and to the customary activity of satyrs-is probably the work of Gaius Petronius. Nero's "arbiter of elegance." of whom Tacitus wrote: "He spent his days in sleeping, his nights in the enjoyment of life. That success which most men achieve by dint of hard work, he won by laziness. Yet unlike those prodigals who waste themselves and their substance alike, he was not regarded as either a spendthrift or a debauchee, but rather as a refined voluptuary...

Justified Summit. On all sides then, homework seemed unnecessary, grand new schemes seemed futile, and the only purpose (in Russian and British eyes) seemed to be to prepare a conclusion that would give nothing away, would solve nothing, and would merely refer things to the heads of government for a summit conference. ...capacity to reason logically. I have grown to despise a particular word. That word is 'compromise.' Have you noticed how everybody is a moderate these days? Everybody is rushing toward the middle ground. We'll have to revise our terminology now. We'll have to refer to left moderates, right moderates and middle moderates. This type of so-called moderate will be caught up and squeezed in the very middle he has created for himself...
