Father Field of Boston is doing a large and much needed mission work among the negroes on the back of Beacon Hill, and he has asked the St. Paul's Society for assistance. The society wishes the mission to be rather a college than a society work, though the management will necessarily be from the society, and so all men of all kinds in every class who feel any interest in mission work, or who are looking for a chance to do something for somebody besides themselves, are earnestly requested to help in this matter. Probably Father Field could find...
...heard by college men. More and more men of recognized standing here in the University are becoming interested, either actively or passively, in the Prospect Union and the various mission fields covered by Harvard religious societies. The particular work in question demands, so far as we can make out, rather the influence of gentlemanly manners than any active intellectual work. Father Field asks for the presence of two gentlemen each evening. Men who have never seen such work will find it interesting and instructive, even if it reminds them of their own selfishness and want of human sympathy...
...students. The practice has all been on an open field where each action of the players, the captain and the coachers was in plain sight of everybody who cared to see it. In the second half there was decided improvement. The men seemed thoroughly awake and Beale and Wrightington made long gains, aided by fine interference. Three more touchdowns were made, from all of which Fairchild kicked goals. The final score...
...greatest significance must be attached to the figures concerning the various schools rather than to those of the college proper. The college has grown, but not proportionately to its size to the extent of the Scientific School or Graduate School. The Scientific School especially has taken a wonderful start. The efforts which have been made to make the school better have resulted not only in increasing the number in attendance, but in improving the quality of the students. Many of them are graduates of colleges who have come here to pursue special lines of study. They are older and more...
