...play does have plot reversals, they are less reminiscent of the action in School for Scandal than of the printouts of a computer randomly permutating a basic word pattern. In PlayBeckett gives us the tried but true triangle of husband, wife and mistress and hints of insanity, murder and rape. But the characters are dead in this chamber piece; we see only their heads atop individual funeral urns. Stanley Kubrick has seen the future and it doesn't work, judging by his apocalyptic vision better known as A Clockwork Orange. Malcolm McDowell's Alex and his trusted droogs mug, rape and generally terrorize their way through a British Sodom masquerading as a civilized society. If your stomach holds out, your sensory organs will be grateful; this is first-rate Kubrick, and you'll appreciate the perfectionist approach to his craft evident in every scene as he spares no detail in creating this nightmarish conception of the fate awaiting modern society...

Naturally, a Simon Legree figure is always handy to do their dirty work, while highborn white ladies dither prettily in the background...
