...movement at Harvard and I was glad to see such a protest of University hypocrisy. This institution cannot stand blindly by its symbol of "truth" while it attempts to deceive the student body by declaring that Harvard investments in South Africa-related stocks do not buttress the repressive and racist system of apartheid. But just as the University basks in the darkness of untruthfulness, I am sorry to say that the indictment also extends to the members of the Open University. I must point out that I am myself a member of the Open University, yet I have not closed...

...mere mention of history and cultural conditions is regarded by many critics as arrogant, elitist and racist. "What makes you think," say those critics, "that only advanced and educated people are capable of democracy? The poor and the ignorant also yearn for freedom, and why should we assume that they are not capable of free government...

FINALLY, DIVESTMENT is more than just an issue of morality and community at Harvard; it is still of vital importance for bringing pressure to bear on the racist regime in Pretoria. While forces within South Africa are still the primary agents of change, the government of President P.W. ...dubbed the "Open University" by protesters--the students placed a 20-foot high "Ivory Tower" to symbolize Harvard's chosen role in that troubled country. In the spirit of their closedminded and paternalistic attitude toward those--both here at Harvard and in South Africa--who raise their voices against racist policies that University investments bolster, the seven white businessmen of the Harvard Corporation have built themselves a comfortable, windowless world. Perhaps as they see the shantytown on their bi-weekly visits to the campus, the members of the Corporation will recognize their complicity in the injustice in South Africa...

...truly saddens me that during the past five years, we have collectively witnessed this "great communicator" utilize (and exploit) media technology to his advantage and to the nation's spiritual and ethical demise. Lebanon, Grenada, Nicaragua, favorable tax status to racist schools like Bob Jones University and a benign neglect for those social, medical and cultural programs which serve as the benchmark of a just, compassionate and enlightened society come to mind when I read of President Reagan's refusal to speak at the Harvard festivities. It is ironic that Charles, the Prince of Wales, should be appearing at this...
