...Italian citizen writing to congratulate you for "The Color of Faith," about Willow Creek Community Church [Jan. 11]. Another example of a vital multicultural church is Baltimore's St. Matthew, where people from a multitude of races and 42 different countries worship together and share life and faith. Jesus didn't distinguish people by gender, economic means, race or place of origin. By doing our best to imitate him, we bear witness...

...told Willow Creek pastor Bill Hybels in 1999 that he was going to use him "to create new attitudes on race," he was about a half-century late. Today almost any public gathering the size of Willow Creek's congregation would be more than 2% African American. A decade into the 21st century, and Hybels is considering allowing a black pastor to preach or teach! Opposition leader Pier Luigi Bersani blamed the melee on "Mafia, exploitation, xenophobia and racism," while Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said Italians had been too tolerant of illegal immigration. Hundreds of immigrants were evacuated and more than 10 suspected mafiosi arrested...

...shoehorned into broader categories for the purpose of following certain laws based on official statistics. But in the longer term, the write-in box could prove to be an even more momentous step in the evolution of racial categorization than the ability to check more than one race. By encouraging wider swaths of people to explain as precisely as possible how they see themselves, the Census is implicitly acknowledging that its count of the U.S. population is increasingly becoming a conduit for self-expression. "We are measuring the characteristics of the American people as they wish to be known," says...
