...written beneath in letters of gold. We cannot add a cubit to our moral stature by yearning to be like those joyful sons of other institutions of learning who herald their democracy and mutual esteem by holing like wolves. Let us be content that the shades of the Puritan will always flit silently among us to dampen slightly our fervency and moderate our joy of living. Those sober men of the old time were not devoid of passion and numbered among them many of the "good and the great", of whom we are still able--on occasion--lustily to sing...

...Harvard Divinity School represents today the original purpose of Harvard College. "Dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches when our present ministers shall lie in the dust," our Puritan ancestors founded here a College. In sympathy with their purpose John Harvard drew his memorable will. Natural science was little known and less regarded; business was so simple as to require no special training; medicine was hardly on its way to becoming a science; law was meanly esteemed, as Lechford found, for the colony meant to the governed by the laws of God as given in the Bible...

No teacher in the School ever thinks of harmonizing his instruction with that...

...self-service--he has but to touch an ivory button--or is it mother-of-pearl?--and a page will bear to him the article desired, be it a package of chewing-gum, or--bitter-sweet reminder of past glories--lemonade and water! Well may the shades of the Puritan stand agape; well may the Blue Sunday advocates hold forth; the finesse of Greece and the luxury of Rome have descended upon Cambridge...

...never be! The new school of pedagogy may allow women pupils, but we feel sure that the College will never be subject to the feminizing sway. That timid idea, so tentatively proposed by the Governing Board will not be adopted at Harvard. The stern spirits of every Puritan from Miles Standish to Cotton Mather arise in solemn protest. We see the inventor of the original "New England conscience" deliver his fateful warning.--Never. The drear halls of Sever shall not be made frivolous. No shall they invade the awful precincts of "Mem". For this is your God: Education. And Education...
