Chief revolter was Francisco Largo Caballero, who claims to be a purer Marxist than Stalin. As allies Largo Caballero had beguiled the pinkish Socialists of onetime Premier Manuel Azaña and the sectional patriots of perennially seceding Catalonia. Señor Lerroux first smashed the Catalan revolt (TIME, Oct. 15). Last week he turned on the pure class war provided by Largo Caballero. As fast as Lerroux jailed anarchist committees, new ones arose. Revolt kept ducking for cover, popping out in a new place, like a prairie gopher. It made soldiers and police trigger-nervous but they remained stanch...

...examination of the Jonkers, London experts last week threw doubt on the first theory that it had once been a chip of the Cullinan, world's No. 1 diamond, found in 1905 only three miles from Jonkers' diggings. The Jonkers is bluer and purer, so pure that Diamond Corp. officials were hoping someone rich and ostentatious would come forward to buy it as a single stone. ...respects and appreciates the work done by Captain Purer on the F-4 more than I do: but it had very little to do with the raising of the S-51 and the S-4 and your correspondent of May 22 puts an entirely unwarranted slur upon the facts published by TIME in connection with the work done in salvaging those vessels...

...average newspaper office is an unfortunate environment for one who is upset by hearing profanity. Presumably the staff of the well-mannered New York Times is purer of speech than the staffs of lustier papers; but the Times's religious editor, a plump, twittery, fiftyish lady named Rachel K. McDowell, has harbored a phobia against swearing since childhood. Lately Times newsmen found in their mailboxes small white slips printed as follows...
