Often, I'd replace Executive Editor A.M. Rosenthal's secretaries while they went to lunch. Rosenthal, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the man with more power at the Times than anyone except for Publisher "Punch" Sulzberger, was usually out to lunch as well, but when he wasn't I would always look as if all I was doing was watching the lights on his phone.
