...writing a story about Big Brown, not Eight Belles, but I was still taken slightly aback when I read "after Eight Belles ... racing needs a feel-good equine story in the worst way" [June 9]. What racing needs is for the "kings" of this "sport of kings" to pull their heads out of the sand and take stock of what's going on. This isn't a game. There are animals' lives on the line. And the way the language of profits and percent shares has infiltrated how we articulate these lives is appalling. Let us all take note...
