The Matthews Scholarships number fifteen, with an income of three hundred dollars each. They were founded by Nathan Matthews of Boston, in 1870; and were given with the provision that "those intending to study for the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal Church are to be preferred."
We also call attention to the fact that this is the week of prayer for colleges. All the Protestant educational institutions in America unite in religious effort on this week. The daily meetings here will be only fifteen minutes long and ought to be well attended.
Selections from some of the following books must be read this month in History 1: Lewis "History of Germany," Seebohm's "Protestant Revolution," Trench's "Lectures on Gustavus Adolphus," Ward's "House of Austria," Gardiner's "Thirty Years' War." All these books are reserved in the library.
There will be a concert of the Glee and Banjo Clubs, with readings by Professor J. W. Churchill of Andover, in aid of the Protestant Church at Berlin. The college authorities have tendered the use of Sanders Theatre for the concert which will be given early in January.
The trustees of the college most reluctantly accepted the resignation. Dr. Barnard has occupied the position for nearly a quarter of a century, and under his administration the college has prospered wonderfully.
