Doctors are loath to admit that patients may be dying because they cannot get proper treatment in overcrowded emergency rooms. Indeed, under such harsh conditions, they are rightly proud of the high level of expert care they maintain. But in some hospitals, as volume grows, there are bound to be errors: in 1988, for example, the New York State health department reported that poor patient care was at least partly responsible for twelve deaths that year at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx.
