...watching a channel that waited half an hour to report anything?--and if we get it wrong, well, whoops!, stuff happens. In exchange, you get a new transparency: unfiltered access, not just to source material (like the Starr Report, the decision almost immediately went online) but to the journalistic process. Viewers Tuesday got to see the messy, imperfect metamorphosis through which conjecture coalesces into fact. It was spellbinding. It was educational. But it sure didn't restore anyone's absolute faith in TV. Consider the final insult. After all that, we didn't even get to see Judging...
Indeed, by the very fact of the nomination process, all the Justices have links to one political side or the other. Ginsburg and Breyer were nominated to the court during the Clinton Administration and have been strong supporters of Democratic views. O'Connor was vetted for her post by, among others, James Baker, who led Bush's postelection fight. And Clarence Thomas was nominated by George W. "When I first read them," she says, "I thought, 'The characters really relate to you--they're kids. They have bullies and bad teachers.' It's helped me understand something--people, maybe my friends, my teachers. It's influenced me to read more...
...Florida, only ballots that were not punched at all, nicked or partly punched should have been set aside [ELECTION 2000, Dec. 4]. Then those ballots should have been evaluated and recounted by hand and the total of valid votes added to the original machine count. This process should not take more than 48 hours. (It would take less than 24 hours in Canada!) Anyone objecting to it and finding legal reasons for multiple delays and a total recount is a partisan who has a vested interest in the result. If there is serious concern that the machine counts could...
