Weapons of the Unarmed. It is Belle who lets the enemy enter no man's land. She falls in love, and brings home Hubby No. 2, a tall, wan, thirtyish lawyer named Maurice. Almost instinctively, Isa, Nathalie, and the demented sister proceed to devour Maurice's peace of mind. They use the weapons of the unarmed: inertia, silence, cunning. They cough when poor Maurice lights a cigarette, cook all the dishes he detests, fall silent, as if spied on, when he enters a room...

Illicit by Another Name. When Isa and Maurice cannot kill their illicit love, they decide to clear its name. They call it "passion" and proceed to enjoy it. The building is constructed like boxes fitted inside each other: the innermost box being the kitchen, the surrounding one "the pit," where the independents eat, the outermost one a carton segmented into a small room for each fraternity. Tonight, however, the fraternity dining rooms are locked and vinly drapes hang like shower curtains all along the room, diffusing the red, blue and white light along the highly-polished brown floor and light green walls...

Should they get to Fail Safe point without getting coded follow-up orders to proceed, they must automatically turn around and head home. Should they get the order to go on-e.g., "Implement Plan Red Fox Eight"-they must still check the order with base command; they must go through several cross checks on message and frequency to ensure against decoy; they must get yet another confirmatory order to proceed. In a normal tactical situation, the only man who can give the final order to attack is the President of the U.S., who relays it to General Power...
