This hardly seems to solve the problem. The Varsity letter in itself is a big incentive and a big reward for playing on major sport teams. Its value is not enchanted by also bringing with it the membership in the Varsity Club. The insignia awarded for minor sports is, after all valuable in a much lesser degree. There are few who go out for minor sports to win the insignia as an honor to be worn. The incentive is more in the abstract honor of being on the team and in getting the exercise. ...lack of good forward material is the biggest problem which Coach Wachter has to face now. R. W. Fitts '23 is still out because of his injured leg and there are several men ineligible because of studies. Dean of the School; Robert Fechner, the prominent labor leader; Whiting Williams, former Vice-President of the Hydraulic Pressed Steel Company of Cleveland, who has spent many months...
Refereeing is a very difficult problem to contend with. How many officials interpret the rules alike? No two in my mind. Some are very lenient, others very strict. I may say the officiating is very unsatisfactory as the players cannot tell just how to play. All this has a tendency to retard the progress of the game as a national indoor pastime. There is no reason why basketball should not be as popular with the youth of our nation in the fall and winter months as baseball is in the summer. There is no question about its attractiveness...
