...Calasso's writing; but these feelings spring from Calasso's treatment of the stories as texts to learn from, not to snicker pre-pubescently at. Even more interesting is his incorporation of Western texts and ideas into a decidedly Eastern way of thinking. Thus Proust becomes a Vedic prayer-chant master; the great creator-spirit Prajapat faces Kafka-esque dilemmas that lead him to be compared to The Trial s K. The gods and mythical figures of Ka are not the heavy-handed, wrathful gods of the West. These are thinking, breathing creatures who can bitch and moan, laugh...
...turns out, it was the one thing she had to offer in return for her weekend of plunder. As the other roommates heard Celeste admonish her strongly, saying, "No you may not borrow my underwear," they had hid their heads under their pillows and sent up a fervent prayer to the night that the interloper be teleported back to U Mass...
This pattern of inconsistency continued. When the choir boys sang Schubert's Psalm No.23, they achieved some exquisite moments of technical flawlessness--and others of bored inertia. ...adding some qualification (i.e. they were good--for little boys), they sang their finale, Mozart's Mass in C Major and forged such a herculean comeback, it was as though another choir had donned their white sailor suits during intermission. Not only did the choir boys sing the sacred prayer with everything on target--their key, their inflections, even their infusion of reverence--but the choir introduced a soloist who sent a shiver down the spine of every patron in Symphony Hall. Terence Wey, a boy of no more than 14 years of age, sang the prayer with a passion...
Your "Week In The Life Of A Hospital" was extremely compelling and inspiring--until you descended into touting prayer. People are healed by the knowledge of trained physicians and nurses, by drugs discovered and developed by scientists and by each individual's own immune system. If the body is strengthened by the belief in recovery, that does not prove the efficacy of prayer; it proves the power of the brain and its connection with all other parts of the body. VICTORIA D.
